What to Expect at a 45-Minute Initial Physiotherapy Assessment in Edmonton
If you have never been to physiotherapy before, the first visit can feel like a black box. What actually happens for 45 minutes? Will you be poked and prodded? Will you leave with a real plan or another expensive question mark? Here is exactly what an initial assessment looks like at Thrive Physiotherapy and Sports in Edmonton's Oliver neighbourhood, written so you walk in confident on day one.
The short version
Your first visit at Thrive is 45 minutes long. You will sit down with the same physiotherapist who will treat you across your entire plan. They listen to your history, examine the area, identify what is actually driving your pain, start treatment in the same visit, and write you a plan in plain language. You leave knowing what is next.
That is a meaningfully different experience from a 15-minute "check-in" you might have had at a higher-volume clinic. The Thrive approach is built around longer sessions because, in our view, that is what real assessment requires.
What happens, step by step
Step 1. The conversation (10 to 15 minutes)
You start by telling your story. What hurts. When it started. What you were doing when it started. What has helped, what has not. What you want to be able to do again that you cannot do right now.
This part matters more than people expect. The history often tells us more than the exam. A runner with knee pain that started six weeks ago after a sudden mileage jump on the Mill Creek Ravine tells a very different story than a knee that has been bothering you on and off for two years. Your physiotherapist asks targeted follow-up questions: which movements provoke it, how it changes through the day, whether it wakes you at night.
We also ask about general health, medications, past surgeries, and other relevant medical context. This information is private and informs the plan.

Step 2. The physical exam (15 to 20 minutes)
The exam is hands-on. We look at how you move. We check range of motion, strength, flexibility, balance, and how different joints and muscle groups work together. We palpate the painful area to find what is tender, restricted, or different from the other side of your body.
For sports-related concerns, we add a movement screen relevant to your sport. A runner gets a running-specific look. A weightlifter gets a lifting-specific look. A new parent recovering postpartum gets a pelvic and core-specific look.
You stay clothed in comfortable, movement-friendly clothing. Some assessments need access to the area (an ankle assessment needs the pant leg rolled up, for example). You are never asked to remove more than necessary, and you can stop or pause at any time.
Step 3. The first round of treatment (10 to 15 minutes)
You do not leave your first visit empty-handed. We use the remainder of the time to start treatment. That might be hands-on manual therapy, one or two early exercises you can do at home, an education piece about what the condition actually is, or a combination. You leave with something concrete you can act on right away.
Step 4. The plan and the next step
Before you leave, your physiotherapist gives you a clear plan. How often we are going to see each other in the next few weeks. What we expect to work on. What signs would tell us we need to change course. What you can do between visits to keep the momentum.
The plan is written in plain language. You should be able to explain to a family member at dinner what is going on and what the plan is. If you cannot, we did not explain it well enough.
What you will leave with after your first visit
- A clear understanding of what is most likely causing your pain
- A written plan with visit frequency and treatment focus
- One or two specific exercises or activity modifications for between visits
- A direct way to ask follow-up questions before your next appointment
What an initial assessment costs at Thrive
Initial assessment is $135 CAD. Follow-ups are $95. Manual Lymphatic Drainage sessions are $125. Pricing is the same regardless of which physiotherapist on our team you book with.
We direct bill to 16 insurance providers including Canada Life, Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, ManuLife, Johnson Group, Definity, Desjardins, Green Shield Canada, Sun Life, Belairdirect, Beneva, ClaimSecure, Equitable, MDM Insurance, iA Financial Group, and UV Insurance. If you do not see your provider on this list, ask us when you book and we will check.
You do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Alberta. Direct billing means we submit your claim at the visit so most patients pay only the portion their extended-health plan does not cover.
What to bring to your first visit
- Your insurance information (card or a photo on your phone is fine)
- A piece of government-issued ID
- Comfortable clothing you can move in: athletic wear, shorts, a t-shirt all work well
- If your visit is for a motor vehicle accident, your claim number and your auto insurer's details
- If your visit is for a WCB claim, your WCB claim number and your employer's name
What if my situation is more complicated than that?
Sometimes the first visit is enough to make a clear plan. Sometimes it is not. If after the assessment we think you need additional imaging, a specialist consult, or a different kind of care we do not provide, we tell you and help you take the next step. We work alongside your family doctor and other providers in your circle of care.
For Manual Osteopathy, which is delivered separately by Karthikeyan Diwakar under the Canadian Manual Osteopathy Therapists Association (CMMOTA), we will let you know if it is a fit and how to book it as a separate appointment with its own billing.
For Massage Therapy, which is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist and billed separately from physiotherapy, we explain the difference and how to book a session with the RMT directly.

What if my injury is from a car accident?
You can start physiotherapy without a doctor's note under Alberta's Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation, up to 21 treatments. We direct bill to your auto insurer so most patients pay nothing out of pocket.

The bottom line
Physiotherapy works when you understand what is going on, what the plan is, and what you can do to help it work. A 45-minute initial assessment is the time it takes to set that up properly. That is the standard at Thrive.
If you are dealing with pain that is getting in the way of your sport, your work, or your daily life, book an initial assessment. We will figure it out together.
